iCivics’ classic constitutional law game Do I Have A Right? won the GEE! Learning Game Award for Best Formal Learning Game. The award, which was announced at the annual Play Make Learn Conference on July 10, honors the best educational games.
Named after the innovator in educational games, James Paul Gee, award judges are asked to evaluate games on questions such as “Does it Empower Learners? Does it create Problems Worth Solving? Does it create Deep Understanding? Does it work smoothly? And is it visually interesting?
Do I Have a Right? challenges players to run their own law firm. Clients come to the firm with various legal complaints, and players must review their situations to decide two major things: Does the client actually have a constitutional right that was violated? Which lawyer in the firm is specialized in the specific amendment needed to win the case?
One GEE! Award judge said that Do I Have a Right? is a “Really outstanding game on a multitude of important topics,” adding that “I was particularly pleased with all of the red herrings thrown in about things that aren’t rights. I could definitely see classroom discussions stemming from this.”
iCivics games have won multiple James Paul Gee Learning Game Awards (GEE! Awards). Last year, Investigation Declaration won the Formal Learning, and People’s Pie took home a GEE! Award in 2023.
